If you’ve ever wondered how some people can have one relationship after another, you’re not alone. Sure, there are certain traits that seem obvious, like physical attractiveness and a smooth talker. But that would be to ignore many other qualities that may be even more important. One of those qualities is playfulness, suggests new research from the University of São Paulo.
Scientific research has previously shown that playfulness is an attractive trait. At least, it is seen as a signal of attractive traits. Being a little crazy, being naughty, teasing and teasing , having fantasy, wanting to experience new things: these are all characteristics of playfulness.
According to science, it can indicate that men are not aggressive towards women, and in women it indicates youth and fertility – two important evolutionary traits. So it’s already proven that playfulness is a trait that both men and women want in a potential partner. However, researchers from the Brazilian university also wanted to know if people with playful personalities also had more partners.

Do playful types have more partners?
In their research, Yago Luksevicius de Moraes and his colleagues from the University of São Paulo set out to test whether this is really the case. Is playfulness in adults related to the number of relationships they have had?
The researchers had 1,191 Brazilian adults fill out a questionnaire asking them how many short-term relationships and how many long-term relationships they’ve had in their lives. They also had to rate how playful they are, using a playfulness scale (yes, this really exists ):
- Other-oriented playfulness: enjoying ‘playing’ with others and using playfulness to make social relationships more interesting.
- Light-hearted playfulness: seeing life as a game and not worrying too much about the future.
- Intellectual playfulness: enjoying playing with ideas and solving problems.
- Unusual Playfulness: Finding pleasure in unfamiliar situations and finding it easy to amuse oneself and/or others in everyday interactions.
The researchers found that men who scored high on “other-oriented playfulness” were the most successful at forming new relationships. They had a greater number of partners overall – both long-term and short-term relationships. On the other hand, women who scored higher on “unusual playfulness” had a greater number of short-term partners.

Part of a strategy
Based on the findings, Morae tells PsyPost that “playfulness is very complex and can be divided into different types.” It does suggest that playfulness is used by both sexes to attract more and better partners, just in slightly different ways.
If you don’t have much playfulness in you, the researchers have good news. They not only conclude that playful types have more partners, but also that playfulness can be used as part of a strategy to find a partner .
