2024 Tokyo Fashion Prize winner Kiichiro Asakawa is Japan’s leading master of quiet luxury, having transformed his brand Stein into a super success over the past few years.
This season marked another big achievement for the brand, with the show taking place for the first time at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. If I had to describe the looks in one phrase, I’d say “subtle layering.” There was something warm, natural, and soft about them: contrasting wools that were sometimes fluffy and sometimes smooth, intricate double-layered coats, and jumpers casually tied at the waist.

Asakawa wears a bomber jacket over a coat, a knitted tunic over jeans, softens broad shoulders with a rounded shape, and ascetic urban looks with warm coffee shades.

In some looks, layering reaches its maximum degree: denim Bermuda shorts are strung over trousers tucked into boots; another wool coat is tied over another; a trench coat is complemented by two jackets worn on top of each other; and an outdoor bomber is complemented by a strict jacket.

Over-the-top styling aside, Asakawa’s knack for creating stylish, functional clothing is undeniable: “I wanted to create clothes that you could wear in your everyday life and feel very elegant when you walked out the door.”
