More than ever, you hear the message that it’s important to love yourself before you can love someone else. This is especially true in a time where you can constantly compare yourself on social media, in magazines, and on reality shows. In the world of dating apps, it can be easy to get caught up in the endless stream of profiles and potential partners. It can sometimes lead to feelings of insecurity and unfair comparisons of yourself to others.
Self-love can help to reduce these feelings and deal with the challenges of online dating. Personal development makes dating less difficult. Dating app Lexa has now conducted research into the level of self-love and personal development among Dutch singles.

Working on your mental health
The research shows that more than a third of the singles surveyed have ended a relationship to work on themselves. This shows that the relationship with yourself is very important. But what is striking is that only a small percentage of both male and female singles actually work on their mental health. About a quarter of women (26%) and a third of men (31%) have ever worked on themselves or their mental health.
Does this mean that there is still a taboo on working on or talking about mental health? The answer is no , because the research shows that more than half of both male (55%) and female (61%) singles are happy with themselves, know themselves well and know what they want. They find it important to take the time to develop themselves without letting their happiness depend on their partner. In fact, a quarter of female singles find it important that their partner also works on themselves and their mental health.

Being single is okay too
This development can be called positive, especially in a world of dating apps that confronts you daily with rejections, ‘unachievable’ singles and disappointments. Working on your mental health is also a way to better know what you are looking for , because you get to know yourself better. In addition, if you are more satisfied with yourself, you can also be more satisfied with your single status. Almost half (48%) of singles are therefore fine with being single , but would feel a little more complete with the right person to share their life with.
All in all, Lexa’s research shows that self-love and personal development are becoming increasingly important for Dutch singles. Although there is still room for improvement when it comes to working on mental health, many singles are happy with themselves and know what they want in a relationship. This is a beautiful development that should be celebrated.
