Nicolas Ghesquière takes us on another journey with each new collection. To celebrate his 10th anniversary as creative director of LV women’s fashion, he decided to travel back in time, or more precisely, to the Renaissance. According to Ghesquière himself, he feels a personal connection to this era, since he grew up in the French Loire Valley with its centuries-old castles.

The collection opened with a series of jackets (including velvet) with Renaissance-inspired details – puffed sleeves, cinched waists and peplums – but cycling shorts, bodysuits and chunky leather sandals brought them back into the present.

His idea was to make the architectural forms with the maximum amount of detail that he loves so much look light and fluid. In subsequent looks, the breeches were combined with spacious blouse jackets or low-waisted ribbed knit dresses.

Ghesquière challenged his team to create coats that looked more like blouses.
“Silk fabric is very alive, and I wanted to achieve a state where you couldn’t put a name to these things.”

The designer mixed mini dresses made of silk and tweed, decorated with cabochons, with rough fisherman’s sandals, textured tops and vests were served with shorts, and fitted leather jackets with a complex model of skirt-pants, which became a novelty of the past fashion weeks.

The division into day and evening would be difficult if not for the abundance of expensive textured fabrics, many long chains and handbags covered in rhinestones.

At the end of the show, Ghesquière showed the fruits of collaboration with the French artist Laurent Grasso – three silk jackets with images of celestial and atmospheric phenomena from the series “Explorations into the Past”, made in the style of the great masters of the Renaissance. To pair them, the designer chose evening dresses with a hem made of long streams of fringe, assembled from rhinestones. A fragment of Grasso’s painting also decorated a suitcase bag.

Ghesquière also mentioned another task he set for himself: to create a “bag of a generation.” To me, it sounded like a move toward roomier volumes and softer shapes that would fit better into everyday wardrobes. This model has appeared in the collection, but time will tell how successful it will be.
