Issey Miyake’s spring 2025 show was all about paper. Audiences sat on round stools made from compressed paper cylinders (ready to be recycled), and the collection featured looks created using paper.
To the sound of dripping water, dresses with veils covering the head appeared on the catwalk: the flowing curves of the drapery and the wet sheen of the translucent fabric reflected the appearance of wet paper.

The following outfits were made from washi (hemp paper) and silk viscose. The fabric allowed the brand’s creative director, Satoshi Kondo, to create silhouettes with detailed folds that were both rigid and flexible, while the surface retained the texture of traditional Japanese hemp paper.

Some looks, made from stiff hemp fabric, looked like origami due to folds, creases and complex, visually flattened silhouettes, while others, consisting of sections divided into segments of different tones and textures, were, on the contrary, smooth and fluid.

The designer placed pressed leaves and flowers on the models’ faces, handed them paper bags with baguettes and fresh green branches, placed wreaths on the models’ heads, and made the print on the crushed silk dresses look like a dried herbarium.

Satoshi had a great time playing around with his favorite deconstruction: the pants grew significantly in the hips, the shirts turned into tank tops, the T-shirts miraculously did not fall off the models, and the decor was made up of paper clips.

The brand’s traditional pleating was also present: one-piece pleated models with futuristic hoods were wrapped around the body, and made of translucent fabric, they covered the entire body with a light cocoon.

Time after time I reviewed the collection, finding new details. It combined solidity and ephemeral, prudence and irony, simplicity and sophistication, modesty and expression – and all this together left a charming mark on me. What do you think?
