Hey! Hello . How are you? Of all these greetings that are meant to initiate a conversation, very few actually lead to a conversation. If you’ve spent any time on Tinder , you’ve experienced this firsthand. So what works as a Tinder opener?
New research published in the journal Computers in Human Behaviour sheds some light on the most effective Tinder opening lines. In short, it says that women prefer opening lines that are either humorous or complimentary—but not both.
“My co-author was really interested in this topic,” says Minhao Dai, an assistant professor at Kennesaw State University. “He was using Tinder for dating and noticed that the results were different when he used different opening lines to chat with others. That made us wonder how dating profiles and opening lines affected dating outcomes,” Dai explains to PsyPost .

The best opening line for Tinder
In the study, 237 heterosexual Tinder users between the ages of 18 and 24 were asked to rate a profile of the opposite sex that was accompanied by one of four opening lines. Participants then answered a series of questions about the person shown in the profile, including their desire to date the person as a long- or short-term partner. Here are the four opening lines tested:
- Complimentary, but not humorous: “ You have a very nice smile. ”
- Humorous, but not complimentary: “ Do you have any raisins? No? How about a date? ”
- Complimenteus en humoristisch: “Are you from Tennessee? Because you’re the only 10 I see!”
- Generic greeting: “ Hey! What’s up? ”

What scores with women
After analyzing the responses, evidence emerged that opening lines with a compliment or humor are better received by women than the generic greeting. However, the wrong opening line with both humorous and complimentary content was not well received by the female participants. The advice?
“For a successful experience, don’t use cheesy or cliché opening lines . Simple humor or a simple compliment works well. However, when you cram too much into one opening line, Tinder users, especially female users, found it off-putting,” Dai explains.

What scores with men
Men, on the other hand, are a bit easier. For men, the opening lines appear to have no effect. Physical attractiveness – based on the photo of the Tinder profile – was the only predictor of whether they would want to date the women as a short-term or long-term partner. For women, it seems redundant to come up with a funny opening line , because no matter what you say, the man is mainly looking at your appearance.
