The Day of Love is a commercial success for retailers because we spend more every year, but how much is that in reality? According to research agency Motivaction , we spend an average of 55 euros per person on the day of love.

More than previous years
The amount we spend on Valentine’s Day continues to increase. Where in 2013 we spent an average of 46 euros on the day of love, four years later it had already risen to 55 euros. That is an increase of 20 percent in just four years. The research agency bases its findings on research among 1500 Dutch people, as part of the Holiday Monitor.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated by one in three Dutch people. Not everyone is willing to participate in this special day for loved ones. It is striking that millennials, aged 18 to 28, attach more value to Valentine’s Day. In this group, an average of 40 percent celebrate the day of love. Moreover, a third of this age group spends more than the year before.

Gift or eating out?
Exactly half of the respondents celebrate Valentine’s Day by buying a gift. The gift is still preferred over a dinner with your partner. However, it is a trend to celebrate Valentine’s Day outside with your partner. Almost a third of the group of millennials celebrated Valentine’s Day in a restaurant last year. Four years ago, this percentage was only 22 percent. Other outings mentioned in the survey include a hotel, theater or the zoo. Staying at home is preferred by the general group of Dutch people. No less than 68 percent of the respondents stay at home on Valentine’s Day.
