In an attempt to be more attractive, more fun, or more desirable, we all tell a little white lie. Everyone does it – without exception. In order to impress a match, some singles find themselves an inch taller, 10 pounds lighter, and 3 years younger overnight. Others claim to be a fanatic exerciser, but they rarely manage to drag themselves to the gym.
Lying comes in many forms, and while some forms of lying are socially acceptable, not all lies are. But even without lying on a dating app , you can still distort the truth by deliberately omitting information or telling half the story. How honest are singles in their dating profiles?
While lying is a term no one wants to be associated with, there are plenty of singles who are distorting the truth on their dating profiles, according to research by dating app happn . The app surveyed its users to find out how much lying actually occurs in dating profiles.

One third is not completely honest
While two-thirds of singles say there are no lies in their profiles, a third of singles twist the truth – albeit to impress their potential loves. In the search for love, many singles are quite creative with the truth, even if it means telling a lie.
The main reason for lying? The fear of being judged, according to 35% of respondents. That’s why singles don’t tell their matches everything and remain mysterious about their daily habits (25%), age (12%) and taste (12%).
“It can be tempting and human to show the best version of yourself when you are trying to win someone over. It may sound cliché, but to lay the foundation for a healthy relationship, you have to be yourself and not pretend to be someone else. It is to prevent mutual disappointments and misunderstandings. Be yourself, with the qualities and flaws that give color to your personality and make you unique,” says Marine Ravinet, Head of Trends & Brands at happn.

The most heard lies
In order not to come across as desperately single, you can leave out the fact that you have 7 dating apps installed on your smartphone. But that doesn’t make you completely open and honest. For example, singles use various lies to avoid downgrading themselves to a failure. And they are also used to avoid hurting the other person’s feelings or to avoid unnecessary controversy. According to happn, these are the three most heard lies on the app:
- “I don’t often read the messages on the app, because I’m hardly on it.”
- “I am looking for a serious relationship.”
- “This is my first time on a dating app.”

“Isn’t anyone open and honest at all”, you think? Rest assured, there are still plenty of singles who never lie. At least, that’s what they say themselves. Of the respondents, 65% say they never lie to seduce.
