The twinkling lights in the streets, the smell of the Nordmann firs and the warm radiance of everything and everyone around you, there is something romantic about the holidays. It is during the Christmas period that the cosiest ideas for a date present themselves. But dating during the holidays is not a priority for everyone, according to research by dating app Lexa . Dating during the holidays
Christmas is in many ways the ideal time of year to be in a relationship. Cuddling together, drinking hot chocolate with whipped cream and keeping each other warm. All in all, it is the perfect setting for a romantic get-together. But not for everyone.
For those who are not in a relationship and are facing a lonely Christmas, the holidays are not a romantic prospect. Sitting down to Christmas dinner with family alone? It is not the most fun experience of the year. You could even say it is an experience to avoid. Lexa’s research shows that a third of Dutch singles (31%) find it quite difficult not to have a partner during the holidays.
On the other hand, the holidays are also not the best time of year to find a partner. The first and second day of Christmas are not at the top of the list of ideal dates. Almost a third of singles (32%) would rather skip Christmas altogether when it comes to dating. Christmas and dating do not go together for them, despite the fact that they have to celebrate Christmas alone .
If Dutch singles do plan a date on one of the Christmas days, more than half of them (56%) would go for a cozy winter walk. Others prefer to go to a Christmas market (37%), watch a romantic Christmas movie or go to the cinema (36%). Cooking and dining together (36%) also appears to be a popular option.

Toasting to the New Year
The holidays don’t end right after Christmas. With New Year’s Eve just around the corner, singles – especially after all the questions about their single status during Christmas – start thinking about their New Year’s resolutions. The New Year is also the best time to start thinking about dating again. A new round, new opportunities, many think, because the first Sunday of the year is traditionally the busiest day of the year.
When singles toast the new year with their date, it is often a non-alcoholic toast. Despite the disinhibiting effect of alcohol, which makes it easier to talk, singles increasingly choose to appear on their date completely sober. Almost a quarter of Dutch singles consciously do not drink alcohol during a date .
For others, avoiding alcohol is not an option. A third of singles say they drink alcohol to be less nervous during a date. The same percentage also finds it unsociable if their date does not order alcohol.
