Highly educated couples
It is no secret that there is more often a match when two people in a relationship have a similar level of education. After all, dating sites for highly educated people do not exist without a reason. And that is confirmed by research.
The CBS study followed almost 87,000 heterosexual couples aged 18 to 52. These couples started living together in 2003 and in 2015 the researchers looked at how they were doing.

19 percent give up
The couples who started living together in 2003, and where both partners had a higher vocational or university diploma, lasted the longest in the relationship. Of these highly educated couples, only 19 percent were separated. The vast majority of these couples were still together after twelve years. The difference with couples without highly educated partners is large: 31 percent of them had split up. Non-highly educated couples are therefore less likely to survive than highly educated couples.

One highly educated partner
Of the cohabiting couples with one highly educated partner, about a quarter managed to survive. About 25 percent of them were still together after twelve years. It does make a difference whether the man or woman is highly educated. Of the couples with only a highly educated woman, 27 percent had broken up. They managed to survive less often than couples where only the man was highly educated: 24 percent of these couples broke up.
According to the CBS, a high level of education for the man is therefore somewhat more important for the sustainability of a relationship than a high level of education for the woman.
