There are plenty of dating apps that help you form relationships with people you didn’t know before. But name an app that helps you maintain those relationships once you leave the dating app? Exactly, apps for couples who want to improve their relationship are (still) unknown to the general public.
A startup that made a name for itself in the tech world last month wants to change that. Couply wants to become the go-to platform where couples can improve their relationships.

What is Couply?
Couply is a Toronto, Canada-based startup that allows couples to create personalized quizzes and plan dates. The goal is to improve the couple’s relationship. Couply, available on Android and iPhone devices, essentially acts as a resource for personalized date suggestions, relationship advice and gift ideas. It also reminds the user of important occasions, moments and upcoming events.
Using a series of personality quizzes based on Gary Chapman’s Five Love Languages and Dr. Taylor Hartman’s Color Personality Profile Test, the app understands the values and priorities of the two people in the relationship. Based on that, it provides advice, tips and more helpful ideas to improve the relationship .
The app recently won the startup pitch competition at Collision , a renowned tech conference that took place last week. Couply beat 49 other startups to take away the coveted title. The startups were allowed to pitch to a panel of judges during the Collision event.

How the idea came about
Couply co-founders Tim Johnson (36) and Denesh Raymond (30) came up with the idea in 2019. Johnson tells BlogTO that “a breakup led to the realization that there are plenty of options for online dating, but no virtual options for maintaining relationships’.
Johnson: “You say you’re single and people immediately say, ‘Are you on Bumble? Are you on Tinder?’. But there are no apps for people once they are in a relationship.” He presented the idea to Raymond and they went to work developing Couply. After two years of development, they have now been crowned the winners of Collison’s 2021 pitch competition .
The app, which is still completely free, still needs some work. For example, couples cannot retake their quizzes once they have completed them. But although there are still some flaws in the app, it offers the necessary variety to the routine Zoom calls, especially for long-distance relationships.
