Carolina Herrera creative director Wes Gordon staged his resort show at Mexico City’s famed Anacahualli Museum, designed by Diego Rivera to house his extensive collection of pre-Columbian and pre-Hispanic artifacts.
“I knew from the beginning that we were performing in Anacahualli. Color is something I always start my process with, and the idea of the sunset colors hitting the volcanic rock really inspired me.”
As the blue sky began to turn light pink and yellow, the first model walked down the runway in a flowing silk dress with a bright orange sun setting against a pink background.

The images, in shades of burgundy, orange, indigo, grass green and amaranth pink, were a tribute to Frida Kahlo, Rivera’s wife, an artist whose style was heavily influenced by Mexican culture and who even wore traditional costumes in her daily life.

The hand-painted embellishments were created by Oaxaca-based artist Araceli Niebra Matadamas specifically for the floral print dresses. The design was inspired by the Mercado Flower Market in Jamaica, “like you’re looking down on all these buckets of flowers.”

The lineup also featured a capsule collection called Frame, featuring pieces in vibrant denim. The looks, which combined pieces from the main collection with the Frame capsule , showed that Gordon had not only retained Carolina Herrera’s quest for glamour and luxury, but had also injected them with a more vibrant energy that could appeal to a younger audience.
