When you see a happy couple walking down the street, do you feel a wave of disappointment? Do such couples who are ‘clingy’ in public get on your nerves? Then you probably also don’t like all those dating ads that point out that others are happy with their partner – and you are not. Fortunately, Google now has an answer to that.
Google recently expanded its sensitive ad category options, allowing you to limit the number of ads from specific categories. Dating is one of those categories. Are you tired of seeing dating ads? Now you can drastically reduce them.

Less dating ads
The feature was previously introduced as a way to show people fewer ads on YouTube about addictive gambling or alcohol products. But now Google has expanded it to more categories that could potentially be uncomfortable or traumatic for you. And now the restrictions apply not just to YouTube, but also to Gmail and the entire Google Display Network.
Google’s network consists of over 2 million websites, videos, and apps that show ads. You could be confronted with dating ads on all of these locations unless you turn them off with the new setting.

Limit dating ads
To access the feature, go to your personal Ads Settings page, scroll down to “Sensitive ad categories on YouTube,” and tap “See less” next to “Dating.” A pop-up will then ask you to confirm your choice, noting that this won’t mean you see fewer ads overall, but it will mean fewer dating ads.
- Go to Google Ads Settings
- Scroll down to ‘Sensitive ad categories on YouTube’
- Tap ‘See less’ next to ‘Dates’
- Tap ‘Continue’
Do you want to see dating ads again at a later time? On the same page it is possible to turn the dating ads back on at any time.

It doesn’t rule out everything
Google says on their support page that they do their best to limit the categories they choose, but in some cases you may still see these ads. As a result, you may still see dating or a picture of a happy couple in an ad. For example, a hotel ad that shows a honeymoon suite with an overly romantic couple in it.
Any restrictions you set for dating ads will only apply when you’re signed in to your Google account. The new ad options won’t apply to Google Search. But the company does have this plan in the pipeline for the future.
According to the search giant, the exclusion of ads about dating and other categories is a result of user feedback. Users like you want more control over the visibility of ads that discuss sensitive topics.
