As 2022 draws to a close, we’re all starting to look ahead to next year. 2023 is just around the corner. How can you prepare for a new year of dating? And what can you expect? To answer these questions, dating app Bumble surveyed 14,300 singles.
8 datingtrends in 2023
In general, the future of dating looks bright. Now that the corona pandemic is almost a thing of the past, everyone is looking forward to a new start. The vast majority (70%) is therefore positive about the romance that lies ahead in 2023. Singles are increasingly able to articulate what they want and don’t want and are therefore no longer held back by what others want. These are the dating trends of 2023.
1. Looks are less important
Matches made in 2023 will literally look different than they did in 2022. According to the research, singles are now more open to exploring beyond their usual type than they were last year . More than a third of singles (38%) are now open to dating someone who isn’t their typical physical type.
28% are also less concerned about dating the type of person others expect. In fact, we’ve now reached the point where 63% of singles prioritize emotional maturity over physical appearance.

For example, more than half (52%) believe that men should be allowed to show emotions , and 38% now speak openly about how they feel when they are with male friends.
Challenging the status quo is reflected in men’s dating lives. They no longer want to be the real man who never cries. According to them, that is no longer the real man . Half of men (49%) say that breaking through traditional gender roles in dating and relationships is not only beneficial for women. It is beneficial for them too.

6. Money is less of a taboo subject

Money is also less important when it comes to the actual dates. 32% of respondents are less impressed by a first date that is over-the-top. The majority of respondents (57%) are more interested in a casual date than anything fancy.
7. More singles are joining
The corona pandemic has not been easy for those who suddenly and forcedly ‘had’ to spend much more time with their partner. Working from home has indirectly caused the necessary relationship break-ups. And those new singles are gradually returning to the dating scene.
Well over a third (39%) of singles surveyed have ended a marriage or serious relationship in the past two years. And 36% of these people are using a dating app for the first time . This means more people will be introduced to dating in 2023.

In addition, 20% of singles say they’ve explored their sexuality more in the past year.
Does this mean that singles will be having more sex in 2023? Not quite. Knowing what you want from your sex life doesn’t mean you’ll have more sex. Of the singles surveyed, 34% aren’t having sex right now, and they’re okay with that.
