Admittedly, I’m a sucker for quotes. Especially during the time that I was recovering from my burnout, I could use some inspiration and motivation. Today I want to share four quotes with you that got me through my burnout.
Be where you are, not where you think you should be.
Right at number one! I can find this quote everywhere, in my agenda, on the chalkboard, in notebooks and on my phone. Definitely recovering from your burnout starts with the art of acceptance and that is one of the most difficult things.
Especially in the first year, things didn’t go fast enough for me. I often wondered when I would feel like my old self again. Now three years later I know that I will never be the same again and that’s fine. I no longer wonder how much ‘better’ I will get because I am happy with where I am now.

The soul usually knows what to do to heal itself. The challenge is to silence the mind.
This quote helped me learn to let go and trust myself. Before my burnout I was really a control freak. It was my way or no way. I also lived from my head. I knew exactly what I was going to do, how I was going to do it and when I was going to do it.
You really didn’t make me happy with spontaneous outings and surprises because after all you mess up my schedule. In the past three years I have learned to listen to my body. In the beginning through mindfulness on a cushion in the lotus position, now by walking for at least half an hour every day.

Choose to see the beauty in everything
I know that many burnouts suffer from gloomy thoughts. Sometimes so intense that anti-depressants have to be taken. I didn’t exactly cycle through my burnout happily, but I have always made it a priority to enjoy my life, regardless of the situation. Looking back, I think this has been my greatest strength: being persistently positive. Is my stubborn character still good for something?
Yet sometimes it is not easy and it takes energy to commit to it. This quote regularly reminded me to consciously look for the beautiful things in every day. The sun, the smell of flowers, the fact that I could go for a walk again, the love I felt for my dogs when they played together or for my boyfriend when we were laughing.
Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire
Because of this quote I decided to only do things that made me happy. I slowly picked up my hobbies again. This quote also inspired me to ultimately resign. What space and peace that gave! I always saw obstacles on the road and took into account the very worst scenario to avoid disappointments.

When I no longer based my choices on fear, worry and uncertainty, I suddenly started making different choices. Because of this quote I can now do what makes me very happy every day. Now I get energy from my work instead of my work costing energy.
Instead of frantically keeping all the balls in the air, I choose that my house is sometimes a mess because I would rather go for a bike ride or take a walk on the beach with a friend. Doing things that make you happy every day is something I wish for everyone.
