Why a pet name?
Using a pet name can help create a sense of connection and community between you and your partner. It can strengthen our feeling and make you feel appreciated . Pet names can also be a way to express feelings that are otherwise difficult to express.
Don’t you dare tell your partner straight to the face what exactly you like about him or her? Give a pet name and you convey the message in a playful, light-hearted way. Pet names are therefore often personal and unique to the relationship. For example, they can be based on your names, appearance or a shared experience.
It is unknown exactly where the use of a pet name comes from. What we do know is that it’s a good sign if you use pet names and nicknames for each other. Research shows that the use of pet names equals more satisfaction in a relationship.
In 1993, research was conducted into the use of pet names among partners. For the study, 154 couples were asked about their satisfaction with their relationship and whether they used pet names for each other. The obvious result was that couples who give each other a pet name are more likely to be satisfied with their relationship. If you want to be more satisfied with your relationship, the question is not why you should use a pet name, but why you are not doing so yet.
