It’s time to go on a date with your match. But you’re probably already full of nerves. As we all know, dating can make you nervous. What to tell? What questions to ask? And will your date like you? You have a lot to think about before the date. And that’s why you try to prepare well.
Meetic research among 1000 Flemish people shows that the Flemish like to prepare for the first meeting. Not only well before the date, but also just before. The dating app investigated which preparations these are and which ones you should better leave out.

What preparations should be made?
From picking out an outfit to thinking of conversation topics, we all prepare for a date. At least, if you take it seriously. To get a preview of who you’re about to meet, you scroll through your match’s profile photos , read their captions, and find things to talk about. But what other preparations do people make when they’re about to head out on their first date?
1. Fun topics of conversation
We all suffer from silences during a date. For most singles, it is the biggest fear they have during dating. Well, fortunately, more than half of Flemish people have solved this problem by doing extra research into fun conversation topics. A quarter of Flemish people even make a list in their head with topics to talk about. Some singles consult online sources for inspiration, while others explore social media channels (35%). Women (44%) do this more often than men (26%).
2. Appearance
Furthermore, we want to look attractive during our date. As a man, you spend time on your hair, clothes and a nice perfume. Or you shave your legs and curl your hair if you are a woman. These are some of the preparations that singles make when they are about to leave for a date. And they have enough reasons for this, because 44% of Flemish people feel insecure about their appearance during their first meeting.
3. Location
In addition, singles take the location of the date into account. They look at the location thoroughly and more than a quarter look up the location in advance. Why? Because they want to know if there is anything fun to do near the location, in case it becomes so much fun that the date is extended. If the location is disappointing, you also have a good backup.
4. Drank
To calm the nerves of the first date , some singles choose to drink some courage first. It is a preparation that not everyone is happy about. In fact: opinions are strongly divided.
Half of Flemish people think that being tipsy on a date is not a good idea, especially women (43%) are skeptical about this. Yet 36% never drink alcohol during their first meeting to show the real version of themselves – including all the nerves that come with it.
No matter how well you prepare, in the end it’s all about that click . According to Meetic’s research , that’s still the most important thing on dates. 45% of Flemish people say that this is more important than anything else. So put on your best outfit, check what you’re going to talk to your date about and just focus on that sparkling chemistry – who knows, a new love story might just start.
