Anyone familiar with the television show First Dates knows how awful first dates can be. For most loyal viewers, it’s the only reason they watch. They watch with vicarious embarrassment as they watch hilarious and embarrassing dates that are so awkward it’s entertaining. And let’s be honest: it’s good television.
Now, most first dates don’t take place in a restaurant with a bartender named Victor. And there’s no one to share a wise saying before the date. But even without these elements, a first date can be awkward. In fact, even without cameras pointed at you, it’s very easy to make a date awkward.

No middle ground
When it comes to first dates , we can often divide them into two categories. They’re either great or terrible. There’s no middle ground. Either you click or you don’t . Either it’s fun or it’s… awkward.

To make sure you don’t fail as badly as the average First Dates participant, we’ve compiled a list of all the awkward things you should never do or say on a first date. At least, if you don’t want to make it super awkward . Here they are.
- Asking them to pee in the shower.
- Asking for a second date in five minutes .
- Stare for more than ten seconds and say nothing.
- Arriving 25 minutes late.
- Saying that you found something interesting about the other person while Googling.
- Start the dinner with an extensive table prayer asking God to bless the food.
- Ask them to crumple or fold their toilet paper.
- Talk to them as if you were a psychologist giving professional advice.
- Ask for advice on how best to deal with your addiction.
- Wanting to shake hands while the other wanted to give a hug .
- Bring a large bouquet of flowers so that they have to carry them around all the time
- Saying that you react very badly when you are rejected.
- Asking for a doggy bag if you haven’t finished your plate.
- Paying the bill with vouchers and ransom.
- Scolding the waiter for doing something wrong.
- Asking if you’re their type .
- To fart so loudly that everyone in the area turns around to look.
- Peeing (or pooping) against a tree during the walk.
- Flirt with the clerk and ask for his or her number.
- Saying that you are engaged, but that no one has to know about it.
- Both don’t want to pay for the date .
- Constantly switching your date’s name with another name.
- Asking how much money your date has or earns.
- Closing your eyes to kiss the other and finding yourself pressing your tongue against one cheek.
