Dating is a lot of things. It’s frustrating when you never meet the one, it’s exhausting when you ’re having the same conversation over and over again , and it’s exciting when you think it might work out. But it can also be incredibly annoying.
While we all want to make the most of our first dates, we all make mistakes that we don’t even know we’re making. Because let’s face it: even good people have bad habits. Some you might be aware of, others you don’t even know you’re doing. And that’s why first dates can be horrible sometimes.
From the weird things you do when you’re nervous to rude behavior you don’t realize you’re doing, people—like you—do things that other people find extremely annoying. Things that singles get green and yellow over. We’ve rounded up 21 of these things so you can set a good example from now on.

1. Look very different from the pictures
You end up spending the entire date wondering whether you should run away, fake an emergency, or sit it out.
2. A chilling comment
Up until that one moment, everything seems to be going well, but then your date says something that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand on end. If you could, you would step into a time machine and go back to the moment before your date asked that extreme sexual question or made that sexist comment .

3. Take a duo selfie and post it online
How would you feel if your date took a selfie of the two of you and posted it on Instagram right away? Not cool? Believe it or not, there are singles who will spontaneously take a photo of the two of you and post it on social media without asking.
4. Talking about exes
If there is a taboo subject in dating, it is your ex. Of course, it is not wrong to talk about previous relationships – in general – but no one needs to know how good or bad 24-year-old foodie and employment agency Kris was for you. And no one wants to know that Kris is 24, works for an employment agency and has healthy eating habits.

5. Asking questions about sex
If you want to make someone feel really uncomfortable, ask them something very specific about a sexual act on the first date . Like, “Do you enjoy doggy style ?”
6. Actively use their phone
It’s perfectly normal when you’re with friends, but not on a date. It might seem like a small thing to you to quickly answer a text. Only then you realize that it’s an annoyance to others to do that in the middle of a conversation.
7. Humblebragging
It’s perfectly normal to promote yourself on a date. Humblebragging, however, is a different story – a way of bragging without outright telling what you’re proud of. Like, “I’ve grown to hate Tinder. I have 45 unread messages that I just can’t get to!” People can see right through the humility and realize exactly what you’re doing.
8. Talking only about themselves
If you’re like most people, your own thoughts and experiences are your favorite topic of conversation. On average, people spend a whopping 40 percent of their conversations talking about themselves. This number increases on a date where you and the other person are the topic. For some, this percentage increases to such an extent that it becomes annoying, because these singles talk almost exclusively about themselves.

9. Ordering for the other
Unless the person you’re dating specifically asks you to order for them, you should never order for someone else. It’s condescending, old-fashioned, and it takes away the other person’s ability to make their own choices.
10. Bad table manners
If you have to listen to what the other person has to say in between smacking your lips, bad table manners are a date-ruining experience.
11. Interrupting the other person
Now this isn’t limited to dating, but on a date it’s even more rude. It’s rude to interrupt people when they’re talking and shows a significant lack of respect.
12. Drinking too much
Getting drunk on a first date is embarrassing. Don’t drink so much that you lose control of yourself.
13. Talking in management jargon
Whether you’re talking about benchmarking, bottlenecks, awareness or your can-do mentality: management language is incredibly annoying if you don’t understand a thing about it. And then people quickly think it’s a CWOT, or a complete waste of time .

14. Kissing out of nowhere
Now, on a first date it’s always hard to pick up the signals . But if you’re not sure the other person wants it too: don’t try.
15. Tapping with your feet
Rhythmically tapping your foot on the floor is undoubtedly the result of a nervous date attempt. But whether it’s on a date or not, it really irritates people.
16. Not brushing your teeth
Before a date, we all do a hygiene check. Well, not all of us. Some singles show up for a date with bad breath, and that is unforgivable.
17. Have nothing to say
If your only answers are ‘yes’ and ‘no’, we’re done after five minutes. Because then the one-sided conversation starts to get boring.

18. Being rude to servants
A firm index finger in the air and an order to ‘get it over with’ in the kitchen does not make you attractive. This rude behavior is exactly what most singles hate. It does not create a magical connection, but rather secondhand embarrassment.
19. Being late
We all have days when the whole planning goes wrong. Now that is understandable when you have to go from one work appointment to another. But on a date that is not understandable. It is quite annoying for the person who is waiting for you.
20. Leave the phone sound on
Who doesn’t hate a blaring ringtone that abruptly interrupts the conversation? Please, do everyone a favor and put your phone on silent during a date.
21. Only being negative
While positivity draws people to you, negativity can drive them far away. Any form of negativity is terribly annoying on a date.
