First dates are stressful. While they’re supposed to be fun, meeting someone you met online in person can be a real source of anxiety. No matter how excited you are to see them IRL, it’s perfectly normal to experience some first date nerves .
First dates stress you out because you can’t predict how they’ll turn out. You worry about how you look, what to talk about, and what impression you’ll make on the person who’s been looking you in the eye for five seconds. But the more you’re in your head during the date, the less connected you are to your body and your surroundings. And that’s when you can make a blunder. Awkward .
Because today is Awkward Moments Day, dating site Lexa has conducted research into the dating blunders that singles make during their dating career. They asked 1,002 Dutch users of the dating site about the biggest date mistakes and blunders they have experienced. From saying the wrong name to slipping on dog poop: you may laugh about it afterwards, but on the date itself… it is quite awkward .

Blunders are not very rare
According to Lexa, 1 in 5 singles has experienced a blunder on a date. For example, a Dutch single confessed to having burst out laughing during a date, making it seem as if the other person was being laughed at.
Another respondent says that the tension during a stay-at-home date became so high that she fainted while cooking. And then there is another Dutch single who had a very awkward date, no connection and too little to talk about, only to stumble and fall into the other person’s arms.

Date mistakes to avoid
In addition to the outright blunders that later yield a nice anecdote, there are also the date mistakes. These are the blunders that are not really blunders, but rather mistakes that could have been prevented. What should you think about then?
Dutch singles find it a disgrace when their date arrives much too late . As many as 80% of respondents find this a real date failure. But it doesn’t stop there, because it is also a flop when a date is postponed multiple times. Almost two-thirds (63%) of singles then drop out, according to the research.
Want to conquer your nerves with a pre-date shot? Don’t do it, because 80% of singles are put off by this. This leads to a negative impression, especially for women (91%) and less – but still a lot – for men (68%). And even during the date, you have to be careful. For 85% of singles, acting arrogant or popular is the biggest mistake you can make.
