For many men and women on dating apps, smoking is a deal-breaker. Some even go so far as to say they will never date a smoker – no matter what qualities they bring to the table. But how many singles actually swipe left when they see their potential partner smoking? That’s what a recent study found out.
Smoking in general has declined in popularity, but is the same true for smokers? Are single smokers less popular than those who never light up? Non-smokers are clear on that. New research from nicotine pouch brand ZYN among 2,000 non-smokers found that 38 percent of them would reject a potential partner if they saw them smoking or vaping in their profile. Singles who smoke are more likely to stay single, the study found.

Smoking and vaping as deal breakers
Non-smoking men seem to have a slightly bigger problem with it than women. 42 percent of men reject a smoking candidate compared to 36 percent of women. When a potential partner is visibly vaping on their dating profile, 38 percent of men reject it compared to 33 percent of women. Both men and women agree that rolling tobacco is the least attractive.
Because singles know that smoking is often unwelcome, a quarter of respondents admitted to lying about their smoking habits on their dating profiles . On the non-smokers’ side, 27 percent of respondents have cut a date short because the other person was smoking.
Furthermore, the research shows that two-thirds find it very rude if their date starts smoking without asking for permission first. 32 percent find it disgusting and 26 percent are irritated by it. Two out of three non-smokers will not go on a second date if their date smoked during the first meeting.
More than a third also say that the smell of cigarettes is a big turn-off on a date. That smell is an even bigger problem when kissing is allowed , because non-smokers prefer to avoid the breath of smokers. More than half of respondents avoid a goodbye kiss if their date has smoked.

Not the only research
Although a study of a nicotine pouch brand does not provide the most reliable information, as such studies are often entirely focused on brand publicity, several studies show that smokers are less popular as dating partners.
Research by I&O Research recently showed that smoking does not have a good image among a large part of Dutch youth. A majority of them would rather not have a relationship (85%) or sex (66%) with someone who smokes. However, it is not only young people who prefer a relationship with someone who does not smoke – it applies to every age group.

In another scientific study from the American Ball State University from a few years ago, researchers discovered that smokers are less attractive than non-smokers. According to the study, smokers are considered less healthy, less desirable as dating partners and are less attractive while smoking. Non-smokers in particular react negatively to smoking behavior, because they also find smokers ‘less sexy, less feminine, less refined, less masculine and less mature’.
According to research from dating app Hinge, men who identify as smokers are rejected 89 percent of the time. That makes smoking men 61 percent more likely to be rejected than their non-smoking counterparts. In short, smoking isn’t just bad for your health, it’s also killing your chances on dating apps.
