Many singles in the Netherlands enjoy being alone . The house-tree-animal can wait, they are not currently looking for a relationship or they have more important priorities. Whatever the reason, they enjoy being single. And thanks to these bon vivants, we are increasingly moving towards a singles society.
More people are unmarried and living alone is becoming increasingly popular. In 1979, the Netherlands had just over 1 million single people – the number of people living alone. Now, more than 50 years later, that number has tripled : the Netherlands now has more than 3 million single people. But not all single people are bachelors.
According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), more than 1 in 5 singles have a (lat)relationship. If we compare that with the number of single men and women in the Netherlands, we arrive at these figures for single Netherlands.

Single women in the Netherlands
There are more single people in the Netherlands than ever before in history. In 2019, the Netherlands had more than 3 million single people. How many women are single? According to the CBS and based on the latest data, that is just over one and a half million, 1,562,000 to be precise. Since a fifth of them are in a relationship, we can say that 1.25 million women in the Netherlands are single.

Single men in the Netherlands
In 2019, the Netherlands had almost one and a half million single men, around 1,475,000. Not all men who live alone are unmarried or single. Some live apart from their spouse or partner, sometimes by choice – for example, if they want to keep their own place. That is why the figures on singles do not tell us the total number of single men. If we assume a fifth again, we can say that around 1.2 million men in the Netherlands are single.

Where these singles live
In the Netherlands, 18 percent of residents live alone, according to the CBS. But that is not evenly distributed: some municipalities have relatively more singles than others. And because twenty-somethings relatively often live alone, student cities have many singles. Nevertheless, this map of the Netherlands provides insight into the municipalities where relationships have many singles – and therefore also relatively more singles.
