The year 2021 is almost over and that’s why it’s time to take stock. Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve? Did you fall in love? Found a partner? Or are you still busy with dating on a daily basis? According to recent research by dating app Lexa, at least something has changed in the past year. Thanks to everything we’ve experienced in 2021 – and we’re mainly talking about corona – the dating game has changed.
The dating site surveyed 1,002 Dutch singles (25 to 49 years old) earlier this month to discover that the mindset of these singles has changed. How these millennials think about love and dating is no longer the same as it was at the beginning of 2021. For example, 3 out of 4 respondents confirm that corona has increased the desire to find love. More than 2 out of 3 singles know (even) better what they are looking for because of the pandemic.

What exactly has changed
In 2021, Dutch singles were mainly dating to meet new people. But that attitude seems to have changed now, because in 2022, 89% of them want to experience a real love story. The previously popular hook-ups and flings seem to be decreasing in popularity among the age group, the research suggests. A whopping 94% of respondents believe that a love relationship is for the long term and 77% start a relationship with the aim of tying the knot one day.
How do single millennials envision their love story in 2022? If they could write it themselves, they’d prioritize romance (41%) and longevity (40%). What do they want in a relationship? Single millennials want relationships that are fun (39%), passionate (38%), and stable (38%). Women want to be smothered in romance in 2022 , while men prefer fun, passionate relationships — with the romance coming later.
What they all seem to agree on is that a relationship should be fun and certainly not boring, in addition to loving . Because in addition to a lasting relationship, 1 in 3 singles in 2022 would also prefer to seek excitement in a relationship.
